According to Vedic date, today was when Srila Prabhupada laid his feet on the land of America after an arduous journey of 37 days via a water cargo ship called Jaladuta. According to the English calendar, this critical event occurred on 17 September 1965, when the Krishna consciousness revolution started in the whole world. After Krishna Bhagat of America, the country makes this day as Tara Maha Utsav.

Struggle Of Srila Prabhupada In Jaladuta

Mrs. Sumati Morarji, the owner of Scindia Steamship Company, rejected Srila Prabhupada’s application several times and persuaded him to go to America. Still, Srila Prabhupada was firm on his determination, and in the end, Mrs. Murarji had to arrange for Srila Prabhupada to board a cargo ship. In that journey, the ambassador of the spiritual world, Srila Prabhupada, was being carried by the name of ship Jaladuta to preach the devotion of Sri Krishna. Even after facing troubles like giddiness and dizziness during the sea voyage Srila Prabhupada was utterly dependent on Shri Krishna, gathered together to fulfill the instructions of his spiritual Master. After a harrowing 15 days of the voyage, the crew had never seen the Atlantic Ocean so calm before. They say that it seems as if Krishna himself has taken over the part of the ship. Srila Prabhupada says in the conversation that no one from his family was with him, but he saw that Lord Krishna was with him. Srila Prabhupada says that when he reached America, he had only 40 rupees. When Mr. Pandya, the ship captain, asked about the worth of a set of Shrimad Bhagavatam, Srila Prabhupada said that it was $16. Mr. Pandya gave him $20, which was his only asset apart from books in America.

Sirla Prahupada Showed His Gratitude Towards Krishna

On the day he chose the land of America, he wrote a poem in his dairy called Markine Bhagwat Bham, i.e., the propagation of Bhagwat Dharma on the land of America. In this poem, he has prayed to Lord Krishna from the bottom of his heart and for his grace, he writes. Krishna is merciful to this insignificant person. Most of the people here are engaged in the activities of prosperity and vengeance, but I know that you are a skilled magician and can do anything with the grace of your cause. Lord, I can only repeat your words, but you can make them understand these words if you want. By your grace, my words will be purified and will pierce into their hearts. I am only a puppet of yours and do not know whatsoever, but I have complete faith in your holy name. I have been given the title of Bhakti Vedanta, and only you can make this name meaningful. On one sad day, a mere monk in the guise of a resident of Vrindavan, wearing a simple cotton dhoti, an old bed cloth, a tilak on the forehead, a garland around the neck, and a Japa garland in his hand for the first time a Vaishnava sannyasi of svardini Varanda came to New York City. The New Yorkers had ignored this humble-looking monk, but little did they know that that same person had brought the priceless treasure of the Krishna consciousness movement, the essential thing in the world, which helps one get rid of the cycle of birth and death.

Srila Prabhupada Contribution

This incredible journey of Srila Prabhupada and the arrival in America is equally thrilling as the intensity of Krishna Bhakti promotion and spread after reaching here. Our founder Acharya Srila Prabhupada life was dedicated to Lord Krishna and his Guru – Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupada, the whole world became Krishna Consciousness. Srila Prabhupada had established one hundred eight temples around the globe, and now, with his blessings, there are more than six hundred temples worldwide. All of us, who succeeded in bringing revolution, should learn from his life full of dedication, loyalty, and determination. It is Srila Prabhupada who taught us what bhakti is and how we should do it. It is all possible because of His mercy that we can do bhakti and serve Krishna in the right way. We thank Srila Prabhupada for enlightening us by letting us be a part of the Krishna Consciousness Movement.
