Once Yudhishtar Maharaja approached Sri Krishna and offered his obeisances to him, inquiring about the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi, which falls in the Vaisakh month, and its value and benefits. Sri Krishna answered that this is the purest and most valuable Ekadashi, an1d this Ekadashi is known as Varuthini Ekadashi. Whosoever observes this fast, all his sins are vanquished, they don’t have to take birth again, their soul gets liberated, and they achieve extreme pleasure.

 

King Mandhata is liberated:

 

Sri Krishna related the pastime of King Mandhata also observing this Ekadashi, and as a result, he got liberated.

 

Maharaja Dunduman gets cured:

 

Once there was Maharaja Dunduman, who fell ill with leprosy disease due to the curse of Lord Shiva. He was in the most suffering of conditions, but when he observed the Varuthini Ekadashi, he got free from that curse and was cured.

Benefits of observing this Ekadashi:

 

Sri Krishna said that Varuthini Ekadashi fast gives the same benefit that 10000 years of austerity. This Ekadashi bestows upon purity and destroys all sins. Sri Krishna said that whosoever observes the Varuthini Ekadashi gets the benefits of giving all the big donations of the world. Those who follow this fast with utmost devotion and during the nighttime of Ekadashi worship Janardan Sri Krishna and engage themselves in Kirtan won’t have to take birth again in the material world. That person attains the abode of Sri Krishna after death. All his sins of numerous lifetimes get destroyed.

 

Concluding, Sri Krishna benedicts that whosoever reads and listens to this story gets the benefits of Ekadashi equivalent to donating 10000 cows, and after death, they attain Vaikuntha Loka.

 

How to observe this fast:

 

We should abandon all mundane work that takes us away from Bhakti during fasting, such as excess eating, sleeping, and surfing on the Internet. We should increase our chanting and hearing of the holy name and company of devotees, listen to the past times of Krishna and in the night, and engage ourselves in Kirtan and bhajan.

 

Ekadashi means feasting for the soul.
