Srila Jiva Goswami

Today we will discuss Vaishnava Acharya, who entered Krishna’s holy name, and Krishna’s devotion’s verses and accord in language grammar. Srila Jiva Goswami is one of the six Gosvami. Srila Prabhupada said that anyone who would read the HARI NAMAMRITA grammar would learn the rules of Sanskrit grammar and become the pure devotee of Krishna.

Childhood of Srila Jiva Goswami

In 1533, on the day of Dvadasi in Shukla paksha of Bhadra month, Srila Jiva Gosvami took birth in the pure Vaishnava family. His father was Vallabha, and his uncles were Srila Rupa Gosvami and Srila Sanatan Gosvami. His family was serving the king. That’s why they were financially rich. With financial wealth, they also had a wealth of Krishna’s devotion. Srila Jiva Gosvami was the son of such a wealthy family. The signs of a great man were manifesting in him since early childhood. When he was too small, then in Ramkeli, he got the chance of Darshan of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He was serving the deities of Ram – Krishna since childhood, decorated them, and used to offer food to them and then kept some Prasadam for himself then he used to distribute it to other his friends. In their early childhood, he became a scholar in Sanskrit Grammar, Kavyashashtra, and Alankarshastra. The teacher of him did a prediction by watching his brilliant intelligence like the sun, which was that “the boy will be a great saint, after grown-up.

Merciful – Sri Nityanand Prabhu

Once, Srila Jiva Gosvami saw a dream that Krishna–Balram’s deities changed into Gaur – Nitai and danced in Harinaam. They both provided the divine dust of their lotus feet to Srila Jiva Gosvami, and then after only a few moments, they disappeared. This dream ignited the flame of separation from Krishna inside Srila Jiva Gosvami. His father and his Uncles had already dedicated their lives to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. So, now he was the alone son in the family who was responsible for his mother. Due to this reason, he could not leave his family and go to the refuge of Mahaprabhu. Finally, he knew that his father, Sri Vallabha, had left the matreliastic body. So he became very sad, and to alleviate this misery, some people suggested he go to Navadveep and meet Sri Nityananda Prabhu. So, Srila Jiva Gosvami went to Navadveep. After reaching there, he fell into the feet of Sri Nityananda Prabhu and started manifesting his refuge. He said, “you are my possessor, and I’m your servant. Anyone who took your refuge then only by your mercy gets the pure devotion in the lotus feet of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Then Sri Nityananda Prabhu hugged the Srila Jiva Gosvami, and then Srila Jiva Gosvami stayed there with him. Sri Nityananda Prabhu made Darshan to Srila Jiva Gosvami of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s birthplace and many pastime places. So, Srila Jiva Gosvami did the parikrama of navadveep with Sri Nityananda Prabhu. Then. Sri Nityananda Prabhu said to Srila Jiva Gosvami that to go to Vrindavan and go in Banaras. In Vrindavan, there were already his uncles who were present and following the orders of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Initiation of Srila Jiva Goswami

By going in Banaras, in a very short span, he took the knowledge of Vedant Tatva from Madhusudan Vachaspati. Now, he was getting very popular in the form of a very scholar Vaishnava and a great scripture. Finally, he reached Vrindavan, where Srila Rupa Gosvami, Srila Sanatan Gosvami, Srila Raghunath das Gosvami, Krishna Das Kaviraj, Prabhodhanand Sarasvati, and Kashishvar Pandit welcomed him. He was younger among all the Gosvami s. After some time, he requested Srila Santan Gosvami for initiation. Then by showing humility, Srila Santan Gosvami suggested he take initiation from Srila Rupa Gosvami. But before initiating him, Srila Rupa Gosvami examined his eligibility of him. Despite being a great scholar, very simple service was given to him, like taking Bhiksha, cooking of Bhoga, cleaning, etc. Finally, by watching the humility and selfless service attitude of Srila Jiva Gosvami, Srila Rupa Gosvami was impressed by him and provided him initiation in Vaishnava Sampradaya and the knowledge of Srimad Bhagwatam.

Divine Service of Srila Jiva Goswami

Srila Rupa Gosvami gave service to Srila Jiva Gosvami to write the Tika of his Grantha “Bhaktirasamrata Sindhu.” After that, Srila Jiva Gosvami did the service to edit the Grantha of Srila Santan Gosvami, which is “Shri Vaishnava Toshni.” He wrote verses more than 4, 00,000 during his life period and wrote & edited the Grantha more than 25 00,000. Srila Jiva Gosvami fame had spread so much that Akbar himself came to meet him in Vrindavan, especially. All the Gosvami s used to gather in Radha Damodar Temple and organize the preaching of Krishna Consciousness. At that time, Srila Jiva Gosvami built a Grantha Bhandaar where he kept all the Gosvami’s Granthas properly stored and kept safe. So, we can conclude that the Vaishnava Literature we are getting is by the contribution of Srila Jiva Gosvami. By living in Vrindavan, Srila Rupa Gosvami started Vighrha Seva of Sri Sri Radha Damodar, and after making them Vighrha ready, he gave them to his disciple, Srila Jiva Gosvami. These Vighrha are also still now being served in Jaipur.

On Tirtya of Shukla Paksa in Pusya month, Srila Jiva Gosvami removed his worldly body. By accepting a spiritual body, he entered into the constant pastime of Krishna in Golok. In the constant pastime of Krishna, he is a Manjari, and his trance is in Radha Damodar temple in Vrindavan. This Radha Damodar temple is the same temple where Prabhupad lived for six years before going to America, and there Prabhupad wrote the first 3 Skand of Srimad Bhagwatam.

So, on this disappearance day of Srila Jiva Gosvami, let’s pray in the lotus feet of Srila Jiva Gosvami that he bless us so that our Devotional love come into being in the lotus feet of Gaur Sunda.
