Shri Pundarika Vidyanidhi: Appearance Day

Appearance of Shri Pundarika Vidyanidhi

The day of the appearance of Shri Pundarika Vidyanidhi is on Thursday, January 26, 2023. However, the timing of this appearance is not known. In this article, we’ll share his life journey as a disciple of Shri Madhavendra Puri and Shri Gadadhara Pandit’s Guru.

Tale of Shri Pundarika Vidyanidhi?

Srila Pundarika Vidyanidhi is referred to as Srimati Radharani’s father in Krishna-Lila in the Gaura-goddess-Dipika. Therefore, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu treated him as his father. His mother’s name was Gangadevi, while his father was known as Banesvara or, by another theory, Suklambara Brahmacari. One theory holds that Banesvara was a reincarnation of Sri Sivarama Gangopadhyay. Pundarika Vidyanidhi’s original residence was in East Bengal, in a community called Baghiya close to Dacca that belonged to the Varendra group of brahmana households.

Sarojananda Gosvami, one of the members of this family, resides in Vrindavana, according to Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati. The fact that each member of this family had just one son or none at all made it unique and reduced the size of the family. East Bengal’s Cattagrama district contains a location called Hata-Hajari, and just a little distance away from there is a village called Mekhala-Grama where Pundarika Vidyanidhi’s ancestors resided. From Cattagrama, one can get to Mekhala-Grama on horseback, via bullock cart or by steamer.

The name of the steamboat station is Annapurnara-Ghata. Annapurnara-Ghata is about two kilometres southwest of Pundarika Vidyanidhi’s birthplace. Pundarika Vidyanidhi built a temple there, but it is now quite ancient and needs extensive repair. There are two inscriptions on the temple’s bricks, but they are too old to be read. However, there is another temple some 200 yards to the south, and some claim that this is the old temple that Pundarika Vidyanidhi built.

What Names Lord Chaitanya Gave to Pundarika Vidyanidhi?

Pundarika Vidyanidhi was given the title of Premanidhi and called “father” by Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Later, Pundarika Vidyanidhi evolved into Svarupa Damodara’s close buddy and Gadadhara Pandita’s spiritual guide. Gadadhara Pandita initially thought Pundarika Vidyanidhi was just a regular man who made pounds and shillings, but after being corrected by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he eventually decided to become his pupil.

What Doubts Arose in Shri Gadadhara Pandit’s Mind?

The first time Shri Gadadhara Pandit and Pundarik Vidyanidhi met is described in an intriguing tale. He had been told that he was a big devotee and someone who should be followed. He, therefore, desired his darshan. He was in doubt when he first saw him. The personification of sense fulfilment appeared to be sitting in front of him, wearing sumptuous silk garments, having his hair styled and oiled and sitting on a large silken couch with beautiful young women seated all around him. Gadadhara Pandit went there hoping to find a sadhu or guru whom he could ask for spiritual guidance, learn from and seek refuge from. But he was surprised to see this sense of fulfilment.

A Ganges River of Tears Flooded in Shri Pundarika Vidyanidhi Eyes

Gadadhara remarked, “I came here to learn from you about Lord Krishna.” However, as soon as Pundarik Vidyanidhi pronounced the word Krishna, he collapsed to the ground and whispered the name of Krishna, “Hare Krishna.” And, sang, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare…

His eyes were full of tears like the Ganges. His body was drenched in sweat, and his hair was standing straight up. He violently flailed his legs about after ripping off his silk shirt with embroidery. He cried while rolling on the ground “The Lord is incredibly forgiving. He yet denies me of His mercy.” His clothing, brass bed, luxurious bed linens, mirror, spittoons and all of his costly possessions were shattered and torn to pieces. Ten men made an effort, but they were unable to contain Pundarika’s delight.

Then Gadhadhara realized his mistake of considering Pundarika Vidyanidhi to be an ordinary materialistic devotee. Rather, Pundarika was a great devotee of Lord Krishna and his love for the Lord was visible through his devotion.

Conclusion

Gadhadhara desired to receive initiation from Pundarika Vidyanidhi to apologize for his mistake. Shri Pundarika was re-awakened to external consciousness six hours later. He now appeared collected and composed. He successfully initiated Gadadhara Pandit. In Vraja activities, Shrimati Radharani‘s father is Pundarika Vidyanidhi. The 64 Samadhis Area is where he is buried.
