Becoming a devotee of Lord Krishna is the first and the ultimate step to attain happiness and bliss. Leaving the temporary & time-bound pleasures of the material world and chanting the name of the Lord is how one can get closer to the Supreme Lord.
Additionally, there exists one more way, which can help in reaching Sri Radha & Krishna which is by attaining the mercy of Lord Nityananda Prabhu.
As understood by the Devotees of Lord Krishna, the highest stage of bhakti is Prem bhakti – pure love for Godhead. This extreme love is showcased by Shri Nityananda Prabhu- the incarnation of mercy, to everyone who prays before him for His kind mercy. Anyone willing to let go of his false pride and bow in front of Him can get closer to serving the ultimate Lord.
Read with us to know what is Nityananda Trayodasi and the incredible stories which make this day so auspicious.
The Story & Importance of Nityananda Trayodasi
The birth of Lord Nityananda Prabhu is marked as the Nityananda Trayodasi which takes place in the spring season. Nityananda Prabhu is an incarnation of Lord Balarama, the very first expansion of Lord Krishna Himself which in turn makes Nityananda Prabhu the first expansion of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who is Lord Krishna, in the form of a devotee.
Nityananda Prabhu along with His companion Chaitanya Mahaprabhu descended on Earth to disseminate Their causeless mercy to every living being.
In this process of distributing His mercy, He did not even consider who is good or bad (uttama, adhama), high or low but delivered everyone who fell for mercy before Him. Being duracara or sinful also does not dissuade Lord Nityananda Prabhu from being merciful as long as an individual is willing to follow “age padaye tare: one should accept and surrender” and is humble.
Lord Nityananda Prabhu is the original spiritual master and the first servant of the Lord. He is the first teacher to disseminate knowledge about Lord Krishna after the Lord Himself. He fulfills His spiritual duty by engaging people in Lord’s service as well as by spreading knowledge and awareness about Him.
The only qualification needed for His disciples is to bow down before him and surrender themselves to the spiritual master.
This has also been mentioned by the Lord Himself in the Bhagavad Gita when He says, “tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena” which means you must surrender before the spiritual master and serve Him & thus you will be delivered from the vicious cycle of repeated life and death.
Lord Chaitanya and Lord Nityananda deliver the fallen souls by making them Krishna conscious and by giving them Hari-nama, the Holy name of Lord Krishna to chant.
It is repeatedly mentioned in all the Vedic Literature that just by following this process even the most fallen people can develop their love for Lord Krishna and become Krishna conscious. Therefore, every individual who is not proud and willing to surrender to Him can get closer to the Lord.
A human being has to always accept the cruel laws of material nature as well as the challenges of material existence. In most cases, humans do not even exercise a choice but are forced to surrender.
The only question remains whom to bow to, for attaining a state of eternal happiness & peace. The answer to this question is to bow in front of the Lord and his representative as Lord Nityananda Prabhu.
One famous story which proves the glory of Shri Nityananda Prabhu is that of Jagai and Madhai. These two brothers born in a Brahmin family gave in to all the sins namely cheating, thievery, womanising, drinking and even murdering.
It once happened that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu along with Nityananda Prabhu decided to commence the sankirtana movement throughout Navadvipa in which they went from street to street to request people to chant the Lord’s name, to worship Him, and follow His instructions.
To carry out the movement, Nityananda Prabhu approached Jagai and Madhai first because of them being the most fallen ones.
At first, the two brothers were infuriated and blasphemed the spiritual master followed by throwing a clay pot on Nityananda Prabhu which drew out blood from his forehead.
This infuriated Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who summoned His Sudarsana chakra to kill the two offenders.
However, Nityananda Prabhu stopped Him from doing it, since, if they killed one fallen soul in the Kali Yuga they would have had to kill everyone thereby putting down their delivery mission.
Seeing the mercy of Shri Nityananda Prabhu, the two brothers realized their mistake & bowed down in front of Him and asked for mercy which was granted by Him.
This acts as a supreme example of how even the most sinful and fallen ones stand a chance of redemption and attaining mercy by bowing down in front of the spiritual master.
By promising to never sin again and taking the holy name of the Lord, Jagai and Madhai thus became devotees of the Lord.
Therefore, it doesn’t matter if you are a sinner. If you fall down before Him, chant the name of the Lord and give up your sinful activities, Nityananda Prabhu and Lord Chaitanya will be merciful to you and deliver you.
There is a verse in Caitanya-caritamtra (Antya 7.11) which says,
krsna-sakti vina nahe tara pravartana
This verse denotes that “The fundamental religious system in the Age of Kali is the chanting of the holy name of Krsna. Unless empowered by Krsna, one cannot propagate the sankirtana movement.”
It is also understood that to approach Radha and Krishna, one needs the mercy of Lord Chaitanya. Further, to get the mercy of Lord Chaitanya, one needs the mercy of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. Thus, to become a devotee of Lord Krishna, one must bow down in front of Nityananda Prabhu.
Lord Krishna showers mercy and blessings on every individual who is His devotee. The only way of obtaining peace is to devote oneself to his prayers, practice preaching about the Lord and engage in His service.
Service to the Lord can be performed in a plethora of ways which include serving His parts and parcels, being grateful for everything and following complete devotion to the Lord.
One can become a disciple of the Lord by following the example of His disciples. Lord Chaitanya and Nityananda Prabhu are two extraordinary disciples of the Lord who must be appeased to attain glory and shorten the path in reaching Radha and Krishna. Thus, gaining knowledge about the path followed by these disciples becomes extremely important.
Only the willingness of becoming closer to the Lord is not enough, especially when it becomes difficult to strike a balance between the spiritual and the social life.
However, one can get answers and have their problems resolved by gaining more knowledge as explained Himself by the Lord in Srimad Bhagwat Gita.
Lord Krishna suggests answers to all the problems Himself in Bhagavad Gita which is renowned as the ONLY scripture that poses a solution to all human miseries for all the time to come.
Additionally, the followers of Lord Krishna can also help you come closer to Him by showing you the right path. One such example is that of Nityananda Trayodasi when every individual can admit the sins and ask for mercy from Nityananda Prabhu to ultimately reach Lord Krishna and serve him.
It is now your turn to apologise for your misconduct and make a promise to the Lord that you will not commit any sins in the future. Lord Krishna always stands willing to embrace even the sinners and give them an opportunity to live close to Him with Krishna consciousness.
